Risk management
The first thing your new fire marshal will do upon assuming the role is examine the fire safety precautions already in place at your company. They will compile a detailed report of your existing measures as well as any work that needs doing to make your workplace compliant with the Fire Precautions Act 1971.
Fire prevention
A key role for your fire marshal is to reduce the potential risk for fire-related incidents in your workplace. Working with their initial risk assessment, they will make recommendations on the best way to protect your staff. This will involve discussion with management, employees, and the local fire department.
Fire warden training
Your fire marshal will train up a number of fire wardens whose job will be to handle day-to-day fire safety at your company. This includes directing staff during fire drills and evacuations, as well as ensuring everyone has left the building. They will also be trained in the use of fire safety equipment such as fire blankets and extinguishers.
Fire evacuation
As part of the initial risk assessment, your fire marshal will evaluate your current evacuation procedures and make recommendations for improvement. Once these have been approved, your in-house fire wardens will cascade this information to the rest of your staff. To ensure everyone is familiar with the new procedures, your fire marshal will arrange regular fire drills.
