FIRE MARSHALS

WHAT MARPOL SECURITY CAN DO FOR YOU

Here at Marpol Security, we understand the importance of adequate fire safety provisions in both business and residential properties. We have a number of highly trained fire wardens, any one of which would be a valuable asset to your building.

FIRE MARSHALS & FIRE WARDENS

Traditionally, fire marshals were confined to commercial properties and were usually a member of staff who had been suitably trained in matters of fire prevention and fire evacuation. Nowadays, many residential buildings such as blocks of flats, sheltered accommodation, and student Halls of Residence also have fire wardens, though it is normally an independent third party who takes on the role, rather than one of the residents.

FIRE PREVENTION

After risk comes prevention. Your fire marshal will be responsible for ensuring that your building is as free of potential fire risks as it can be. They will check fire signage and emergency lighting, run fire drills, liaise with the local fire service, and so much more. They will also be proactive in identifying fire hazards as they appear and reporting them to the appropriate member of the management team.

ALARM RESPONSE

FIRE EVACUATION

Of course, accidents still happen, and all the precautions in the world won’t prevent every fire from taking place. In the event of a fire, it is the fire marshal’s job to ensure that everybody is out of the building and accounted for. This is where the regular drills they have staged for the staff come into play. If not already done so, the fire warden will also raise the alarm and liaise with the fire service as and when they reach the scene, compiling a complete report on the causes of the fire, to prevent such an incident from recurring.

RISK MANAGEMENT

Part of the job of any fire marshal is to assess the building and determine whether it complies with the Fire Precautions Act 1971 and other relevant pieces of legislation.

This is a key part of the role and involves basic common sense:

– Are all fire exits kept clear?

– Have any tripping hazards been removed from stairwells and doorways?

– Has all fire-fighting equipment been inspected in recent months?

Simple stuff, but a key part of any fire warden’s role.
